Pearl Regina Wheeler

Pearl Regina Wheeler, 80, of Irasburg died April 27, 2008, in Newport.

Mrs. Wheeler was born March 22, 1928, in Milan, New Hampshire, a daughter of Earl and Ozilda Regina (Prive) Dunn.

On March 13, 1969, she married Gordon Wheeler, who predeceased her.

She owned and operated a concession stand at fairs in several states.

She held memberships with the American Legion Post 21 Auxiliary in Newport and Pamona Grange in Coventry.

She enjoyed knitting, playing bingo, spending time with her family, and feeding her birds.  In her younger years, she drove racecars at the Newport Racetrack.  She was an avid NASCAR fan.

She is survived by her children: Lynn Brown and her husband, Bruce, of Lake Worth, Florida, Robert Lawson and his wife, Janet, of Irasburg, Vickie Hall and her husband, Larry, of Irasburg, Sandra Ticehurst and her husband, Ron, of Ogden, Quebec, and Jack Lawson Jr. and his friend, Julie, of Farmington, Maine; by 16 grandchildren; by 27 great-grandchildren; by one great-great-grandchild; by her brothers:  Homer Dunn and his wife, Ruth, of Bellows Falls, Charles Dunn and his wife, Thelma, of East Dummerston, and Mitchell Dunn and his wife, Sandy, of Lowell; by aunts and uncles in Canada; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Wheeler; by brothers Manny Dunn and his partner, Florence, and Roland Santaw and his wife, Ellen; and by her grandson Sean Hall.

Funeral services were held May 2 with Pastor George Lawson officiating at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport.  Interment followed at the Irasburg Cemetery.

Thelma F. Wakeman

Thelma F. Wakeman, 79, of East Hartford, Connecticut, died Saturday, April 19, 2008, at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation Center in East Hartford.

Born in East Franklin, Ms. Wakeman was a daughter of the late Albert and Alda (Guthrie) Wakeman.

She was employed at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for many years.

She is survived by two brothers, Donovan Wakeman  of Barton and Johnny Wakeman of Greenfield, New Hampshire; by her sister Joyce Hassan of Sun City West, Arizona; by her niece Louann Hall of Granby, Connecticut; and by her dear friend Marjorie Hall of East Hartford.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Vermont.

Dexter F. Taylor

Dexter F. Taylor, 67, of Union, Maine, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, Maine.

Mr. Taylor was born April 14, 1941, in East Charleston, a son of Calvin and Jennie Coville Taylor.  He attended local schools.

He was active with the Army National Guard in Vermont in the early 1960s.

He worked as a driver for Woodway Movers in Newport.  While in Vermont, he married Marilyn Taylor, and they had two children.

He moved to Maine in 1977. He worked in the mill for Crowe Rope in Warren, Maine, for 23 years and later for Robbins Lumber in Searsmont, Maine.  He lastly worked for Corson’s NAPA Auto Parts in Rockland, Maine.  He married Mae Dudley Taylor in Maine.

He loved animals and feeding and watching birds.  He always had an immaculate lawn and liked keeping things neat.  He enjoyed playing horseshoes and spending time with his family and friends.  He collected antiques and enjoyed exploring new roads to see where they would come out. He enjoyed sitting in his cat-napping chair and watching television.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mae Taylor; and by brother-in-law Arthur Burns.

He is survived by three daughters:  Pamela Timberlake and her husband, Ron, of Washington, Maine, Nancy Ryan and her husband, Tom, of Williston, and Linda Taylor of Missouri; by his son Roger Taylor of California; by sisters Goldie Burns of Union and Veleda Hubbard of Lyndonville; by ten grandchildren; and by numerous nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro, Maine. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hall Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Union.  Pastor Norman Finnemore will officiate.

Guy C. Royea

Guy C. Royea, 82, of Newport Center died suddenly May 1, 2008, in Newport.

Mr. Royea was born September 23, 1925, in Brownville Junction, Maine, a son of Jesse and Melissa (Guilbert)Royea.

On October 9, 1952, he married Ruth Columbia, who predeceased him.

He was a fireman with the Canadian Pacific Railway for 36 years.

He entered the United States Navy and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II.

He held membership with American Legion Post 21.

He enjoyed refinishing pleasure boats and being with his dogs.

He and his wife went to Florida for 21 years after his retirement.  They enjoyed raising horses and showing them at horse shows throughout northern Vermont.  They also raised dogs.

He is survived by two children, Susan Royea and David Royea and his wife, Diane, all of Newport; by grandchildren:  Kevin Royea and his wife, Kristy, of North Troy, Christopher Royer and his wife, Jennifer, of Nashville, Tennessee, Jennifer Royea and her companion, Andrew Desroches, of Jay, and Jesse Royea and his fiancée, Megan Tice, of Newport; and by eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers: Lawrence, Harry, and Carlton.

Funeral services were held at the Advent Christian Church in Newport Center May 6 with the Reverend Chris Barton officiating.  Interment followed in Newport Center Cemetery with full military honors.

Raymond H. Paquin

Raymond H. Paquin, 76, of Stanstead, Quebec, died April 25, 2008, at a Sherbrooke, Quebec, hospital.

Mr. Paquin was born November 20, 1931, in Arthabaska, Quebec, a son of Alfred and Rose-Anna (Rousseau) Paquin.

On July 17, 1954, he married Jeannine Auger in Granby, Quebec.  She survives him.

In 1962 he moved his family to North Troy, where he and his wife farmed.  Later he farmed in Newport Center and owned the Royal Restaurant on Main Street in Newport.  He was also known as a great carpenter.

After retirement, he and his wife moved to Stanstead and enjoyed the winter months at their Florida home.  He loved being around family and friends, gardening, fishing, bowling, and lending a helping hand.

He leaves his wife, Jeannine Auger; his children:  Danielle Paquin and her husband, Barry Parmenter, of Lakeville, Connecticut, Michelle Côté and her husband, Alain, of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Jean-Guy Paquin and his wife, Marie Brasseur, of Newport Center; his grandchildren:  Shawn Carrier and his wife, Tanya Bergeron, Eric Carrier, Stephan Carrier, Nicholas Côté, and Raymond Paquin; his great-grandchildren Hailey Carrier and Alex Gonzalez; his siblings:  Irene Paquin and Clement and his wife, Gertrude Cantin; by brothers- and sisters-in-law:  Yvonne Hebert, Rose Hélène Cantin, Rita Lagimoniére, André Farley, Gaston and his wife, Anita Boie, Jean-Claude, Robert and his wife, Yvette d’Amboise, Normand and his wife, Therese Riendeau, Claudette and her husband, Gilles Chalifoux, Philippe and his wife, Gail Colburn, and Micheline; and by many friends and family.

He was predeceased by siblings: Henri, Marcel, Normand, Germain, Simone, Marie Martha, Sylvio, René, and Lisette; by his granddaughter Amelia Paquin; and by brothers- and sisters-in-law: Richard Auger and his wife, Francoise Lacasse, and ElphegeChainey.

Funeral services were held April 30 at Sacred Heart Church in Stanstead.  Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newport.

Elsie Davis

Elsie Davis, 88, of Derby died peacefully May 1, 2008, in Newport.

Mrs. Davis was born October 13, 1919, in Sheffield, a daughter of Sam and Mary (Leonard) Paul.

On January 23, 1940, she married Rogers Davis, who predeceased her.

She was a licensed practical nurse and did private duty nursing in the Concord, New Hampshire, area.

She was an elder for the NulheganAbenaki Band, and she was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries.

She is survived by her children: Edmund Davis Sr. and his wife, Nancy, of Derby, Richard Davis of Newport, and Douglas Davis of Charleston; by grandchildren:  Edmund Davis Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Newport, Keith Davis and his companion, Hope Bent, of Tennessee, Duayne Davis and his companion, Bonnie Karpoof, of Derby, Bradley Davis and his companion, Ashley Stevens, of Orleans, Douglas Davis Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Orleans, Anthony Davis and his wife, Lisa, of New Hampshire, Debra Davis of Charleston, Jacinda Davis of Colebrook, New Hampshire, and Anthony Davis Jr. of Orleans; by 18 great-grandchildren; by six great-great-grandchildren; by four sisters:  Ethel Basford of Orleans, Edith Degreenia of Concord, Ruth Terfederin of Whitefield, New Hampshire, and Rita French ofHopkington, New Hampshire; and by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating.  Friends may call Thursday at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the hour of the funeral. Interment will follow in Brownington Center Cemetery.

William “Bill” Bullis

William “Bill” Bullis, 72, of Cocagne, New Brunswick, died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the Moncton City Hospital after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Bullis was born April 9, 1935, in Newport to Alfred and Dorothy (Sanville) Bullis.

He married Annette (Dallaire) Bullis.

He was a U.S. veteran of the Korean War.

He loved his family, friends and neighbors.  He loved life, his work as a truck driver with Gilco Ready Mix (prior to his retirement), and the friendships he developed with his co-workers.  He enjoyed his daily outings to Tim Hortons, and he will be sadly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Annette; by one daughter, Penny Allain, of Memramcook, New Brunswick; by three sons:  Stephen and Michael of Massachusetts and Kenneth of North Carolina; by three sisters:  Iona Carter of Newport, Esther Peck and her husband, Terrance, of Massachusetts, and Connie Rogers and her husband, Bobby, of Florida; by 11 grandchildren:  Amy, Chris, Stephanie, Jason, Penny, Sherry, Kerry, Jennifer, Kendra, Tiffiny, and Noel; and by several nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents; by his sister Ardene; and by three brothers:  Selden, Rob, and Larry.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at the Derby United Church with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating.  Interment will follow in the Newport Center Cemetery.
