Ervin Willey
Ervin Willey, 96, a longtime resident of Hardwick, Greensboro, and Morrisville, died quietly on March 18, 2008,in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he had resided with his son Richard and daughter-in-law Roz.
Mr. Willey was born July 30, 1911, in Greensboro to Harrison and Lota Allen Willey. He lived the first 80 years of his life in northern Vermont, where he was occupied at various times as a farmer, creamery worker, and carpenter.
In the late 1930s he married the love of his life, Julia Coolbeth.
He was dedicated to his family: wife, Julia, daughter Harriet, and son Richard.
His sense of humor and love of life endeared him to all who were fortunate to know him, and he will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his son Richard; by his daughter-in-law Roz; by his grandson John; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Julia; and by his daughter Harriet.
Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, at the Greensboro Village Cemetery, where he will join his beloved Julia and Harriet.

Marcel Maurice Tanguay
Marcel Maurice Tanguay, 68, well-known Newport businessman, died May 14, 2008, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
Mr. Tanguay was born March 22, 1940, in Newport Center, a son of Emilien and Maria (Dumont) Tanguay.
On November 30, 1963, he married Nancy LaPlante, who survives him.
He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Newport and was owner of Brown’s Concrete Products in Woodsville, New Hampshire.
He held memberships with the American Legion in Lady Lake, Florida, Knights of Columbus Gibbons Council of Newport, and the Vermont National Guard. He was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport and the Newport Country Club.
He enjoyed playing golf in Newport and Florida, which was his favorite pastime. He and his wife, Nancy, owned several motor homes for many years and enjoyed traveling and camping up and down the East Coast. They also took a trip to California. They enjoyed the coast of Maine, especially Old Orchard Beach.
Their love of Vermont continued with their return to Newport and recent purchase of a camp on Lake Memphremagog.
They established many lasting friendships wherever they traveled. They were very family oriented, and they loved their family dearly, especially their grandchildren as they watched them grow in their many sports activities.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Tanguay, of Newport; by three children: Janet Tanguay of Amsterdam, New York, Jamie Tanguay and his fiancée, Andrea Archambault, of Sunapee, New Hampshire, and Julie Gendron and her husband, Peter, of Merrimack, New Hampshire; by five grandchildren: Tyler and Eric Gendron and Kayla, Ryan, and Brandon Tanguay; by his siblings: FernandTanguay of Orleans, Rita Piette and her husband, Marcel, of Irasburg, and Simone Fitzgerald and her husband, Martin, of East Montpelier; by two sisters-in-law, Theresa Tanguay of Newport and Sally Lemieux of Newport; by his mother-in-law, Shirley LaPlante, of Newport; by brother-in-law Terry LaPlante of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Claude Tanguay; by his sister Jeanne Boissonnault; and by sister-in-law Claire Tanguay.
Funeral services were held May 19 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Chandler B. “Bud” Nealy
Chandler B. “Bud” Nealy, 79, of Shelburne and Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, died Monday, April 28, at his winter residence in Florida after a long illness.
Mr. Nealy was born December 22, 1929, in Newport, a son of Ralph E. and Grace (Chandler) Nealy.
He graduated from Newport High School in 1946 and joined the Navy, which allowed him to travel the world.
Upon his return, he enrolled at the University of Vermont and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering.
He began his working career with Westinghouse Electric and later went to work for Schiring X-ray, located at the time in Colchester. He went on to buy the company and operate it for many years, retiring in 1989.
He married Carolyn Lewis on June 5, 1950, in Newport.
He was an “old timer” friend of Bill W., and had many valued friends over 48 years in the program.
He was an inspiration to all those who knew him. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Shelburne and was very much a spiritual soul.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, reading, and doing crossword puzzles, but most of all, he was a generous and devoted husband, father, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Lewis; by his five children and their spouses: Craig of New York, New York, Jon and Marianne of Shelburne, Eric and Diane of Waterbury, Matthew and Kimberly of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and Robin Lawyer and her husband, Todd, of St. Albans; by his 11 loving grandchildren; by his sister Ruth Vanderbrook and her husband, Richard, of Tonawanda, New York; and by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Donations in Mr. Nealy’s memory may be made to the Committee on Temporary Shelter or the Chittenden County Food Shelf.

Beverly Mossa
Beverly Mossa, 83, of Newport died Thursday evening, May 15, 2008, at her home.
She was surrounded by family and friends during the last few days of her life, and she will be missed by so many who knew her.
Mrs. Mossa was born December 28, 1924, in Newport, a daughter of Benjamin Smith and Maude (Morgan) Smith.
She graduated from Newport High School in 1942 and went on to acquire her registered nurse degree in Boston, Massachusetts.
She married William “Bill” Mossa on August 16, 1948, and returned to this area, where she was a nurse at Broadview General Hospital and Orleans County Memorial Hospital for many years. Whether she was in the operating room or on the labor and delivery floor, her comforting and patient assurance left gentle impressions on every patient.
She left the hospital environment to become the school nurse at Newport City Elementary School, enjoying the schedule that would allow her more time to spend with her family. Her responsibilities would later include Newport High School and the junior high program.
When North Country Union High School opened in 1967, she took the position as school nurse. She remained until her retirement in June 1989.
She would forever cherish the friendships that were created during this part of her life, and she continued to keep in close touch with these special friends for the remaining years of her life.
She was devoted to her husband, Bill, and together they enjoyed many wonderful years, raising their children in Newport, traveling with friends, and hosting many celebrations at their camp in Morgan.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1983.
Her retirement was devoted to her family and grandchildren. Although she enjoyed her rose gardens, creating beautiful quilts, and traveling, the role she was happiest in was as a tender and loving mother and grandmother.
Her unconditional love and guidance will forever be treasured by her children Billie, Ben, and Candice and her granddaughters Emily and Lindsay Howe.
She is survived by her children: Billie (Mossa) Howe and her husband, Gregory Howe, of Derby, Candice Mossa and Brian Smith of Derby, and Ben Mossa and his wife, Julie (Sanville) Mossa, of Derby; by three grandchildren: Emily and Lindsay Howe of Derby and Erica Gray of Derby; by one great-grandchild, Natalie Holmes, of Derby; by her sister-in-law Lorraine Mossa of Florida; and by several nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Glenna Smith and Ruth (Smith) Hodges; by her beloved friend and sister-in-law Julie (Mossa) Versage; and by her brother-in-law Dennis Mossa.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler officiating.

Alfred R. Monfette
Alfred R. Monfette, 88, of Newport died May 18, 2008, in Newport.
Mr. Monfette was born May 6, 1920, in Newport, a son of Carl and Winifred Monfette.
On December 23, 1940, he married Blanche Farrar, who survives him.
He entered the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II.
He was a mechanic for W.S. Mitchell’s in Newport for many years.
He was a very basic person who enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed his trips to Germany, Alaska, Italy, Florida, Virginia, Nebraska, Arizona, and Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Monfette, of Newport; by children: Alfred Monfette and his wife, Maria, of Florida, Craig Monfette and his wife, Susan, of Newport, Dian MacIntosh and her husband of Virginia, Linda Wheeler of Newport, and Darleen Grenier and her husband, Albert, of Newport; by 13 grandchildren; by 28 great-grandchildren; by three great-great-grandchildren; by his brother Paul Monfette and his wife, Dorothy, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Gary Monfette; by two grandchildren; by four brothers; and by six sisters.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Dorothy Ruth Knowles, 86, formerly of Newport, died March 20, 2008, at the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester.
Ms. Knowles is survived by her son Melvin Kelley; by her brothers Robert Knowles and his wife, Charlotte, and Dale Knowles and his wife, Connie; by his sister Florence Boucher; by two grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Michael Kelley; by her brother Leonard Knowles; and by her sister Pearl Collins.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 2:30 p.m. at the Derby Center Cemetery.

Mark H. Holmes
Mark H. Holmes, 46, of Derby died in Derby on Monday, May 12, 2008.
Mr. Holmes was born August 14, 1961, a son of Lee and Marie (Joyal) Holmes. He enjoyed his family and his cat.
He is survived by his father, Lee Holmes, of Derby Line; by his mother, Marie, of Newport; and by his sister Diane of Westfield.
Funeral services were held May 17 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line with Deacon Peter Klimanowski officiating. Interment followed at the Derby Center Cemetery.

Ray “Frenchy” Gagnon
Ray “Frenchy” Gagnon, 82, of Gulfport, Mississippi, died April 22, 2008, in Gulfport.
Mr. Gagnon was a native of Salem, Massachusetts, and was a former resident of East Haven, Connecticut, for 53 years.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in World War II. He is a Purple Heart recipient.
He retired after 32 years of service from the United States Postal Service.
He was a member of Our Lady of Pompeii Catholic Church.
He was known as “Frenchy” by all the guys at the Cue & Brew in Branford, Connecticut.
He and his daughter attended the Perron family reunion in Glover each year.
He was predeceased by his wife of 30 years, Rita (Perron) Gagnon, formerly of Glover; and by his brother Pete Gagnon. Survivors include his daughter Jacqueline Oppel of Gulfport; his sister Rita Potty of Florida; his brother Lionel Gagnon of Florida; and his granddaughter Lieutenant Tanya Casey and her husband, Lieutenant Dan Casey, of Germany.
Private services will be held at a later date.

Roland D. “Bud” Cote
Roland D. “Bud” Cote, 85, formerly of Spofford, New Hampshire, died peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2008, at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, after a period of declining health.
Mr. Cote was born February 12, 1923, in Orleans, a son of Marshall N. and Eliza P. (Ducharme) Cote, the seventh of nine children. He attended area schools.
He married Hazel I. Rounds on December 23, 1948.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 504th Military Police Battalion, seeing action in central Europe in the Rhineland Campaign from 1944 to 1946.
He had been employed with the Crosby Milling Company in Brattleboro, the American Optical Company in Brattleboro, and Cheshire Transportation in Keene, New Hampshire. He was proprietor of The House of Macramé in Spofford with his wife, Hazel.
He had been a member of the Moose Lodge in Keene, Mt. Pistatreen Grange in Spofford, Monadnock Squares Veterans of Foreign Wars in Keene, Keene Horse Shoe Club, Pine Springs Country Club in Spofford, and the Orleans Country Club.
He is survived by his sons Bruce W. Cote of Westmoreland and Dennis G. Cote of Brattleboro; by his sister Evelyn Jenne of Orleans; by seven grandchildren; by seven great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. His wife, Hazel Cote, died April 2, 1998.
Funeral services for Mr. Cote were held on April 23 at the Fletcher Funeral Home in Keene. Burial followed in the family lot in South Village Cemetery in Westmoreland.

Carolyn Lewis “Tally” Nealy
Carolyn Lewis “Tally” Nealy, 78, of Shelburne and Indian Rocks Beach, Florida, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at her winter residence in Florida after a lingering illness. She is reunited with her husband and soulmate, Chandler “Bud” Nealy, who had died nine days earlier.
Mrs. Nealy was born September 14, 1929, in Newport, a daughter of C. Earl and Winsome (Jones) Lewis. She graduated from Newport High School and Burdett Business College in Boston.
On June 5, 1950, she married Chandler B. Nealy in Newport.
She was one of the original employees of the IBM plant in Essex Junction, before becoming a full-time homemaker. She worked as a real estate agent for a number of years.
She was a woman of great strength and fortitude. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, listening to big band music, spending time with friends, and visiting with her children and grandchildren. She was loved and admired by many and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Chandler Nealy, on April 28, 2008; and by her sister Jeanne L. Keith in 1998. She is survived by sister-in-law Ruth Vanderbrook and her husband, Richard, of Tonawanda, New York; by her five children and their spouses: Craig of New York, New York, Jon and Marianne of Shelburne, Eric and Diane of Waterbury, Matt and Kimberly of Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and Robin and her husband, Todd Lawyer, of St. Albans; by 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services for she and her husband will be held Saturday, July 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Shelburne. There will be a luncheon reception in the McClure room following the service. Interment will follow in the family lot at Fairfax Plains Cemetery.
Their children and grandchildren miss them and will always love them.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or the local charity of choice.
