Grace Marjorie Rockwell

Grace Marjorie Rockwell, 89, of Barton died peacefully April 2, 2008, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.

Mrs. Rockwell was born June 28, 1918, in Boston, Massachusetts, a daughter of Edgar and Eveline (McMurray) Wentworth.

On June 18, 1939, she married Charles Rockwell, who predeceased her on August 24, 1994.

She enjoyed knitting afghans for her family, snowmobiling with her sons, going for rides, looking out her picture window at Crystal Lake, and helping her daughter Audrey in the greenhouse.  She adored cats and was a NASCAR fan, especially of driver Bill Elliott.

She is survived by her children Audrey Rockwell of Barton and Richard Rockwell and his wife, Georgette, of Barton; by her grandchildren:  Rhonda, Robert Jr., Donald Jr., Wendy, Laura, Angela, Charlie, Steven, and Kelly; by great-grandchildren:  Garrett, Austin, Marina, Ryan, Justin, Dave, Megan, Cameron, Ashley, and Brandon; by her daughters-in-law Norma Rockwell of Barton and Elizabeth Labrecque of Glover; by sisters Audrey Frank of Falmouth, Massachusetts, and Dorothy Wentworth of Beverly Hills, Florida; and by several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sons:  Robert and Donald Rockwell; and by brothers:  Sonny, William, and David Wentworth.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on May 17 at Westlook Cemetery in Glover with the Reverend Evelyn Coupe officiating.

Dorothy Yvette Mason

Dorothy Yvette Mason, 84, of Albany died peacefully April 3, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Mason was born December 4, 1923, in Center Falls, Rhode Island, a daughter of Joseph and Loretta (Adams) Laverdiere.

On April 21, 1941, she married Maynard Mason, who survives her.  She and her husband raised their children on the family dairy farm they had for 63 years.

She made cakes, enjoyed crocheting and quilting, and loved crossword puzzles, gardening, and canning. She was very proud that when she was in her sixties, she received her general equivalency diploma.

She is survived by her husband, Maynard Mason, of Albany; by children:  Donald Mason and his wife, Guyla, of East Calais, Gary Mason and his wife, Valvette, of Albany, Priscilla Mason of Hardwick, Paulette Webster and her husband, Mark, of Irasburg, Roger Mason and his friend, Bonnie McGregor, of Albany, and Randy Mason and his wife, Carole, of Albany; by 12 grandchildren; by 11 great-grandchildren; by sister-in-law Joyce Laverdiere of North Granby, Connecticut; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Norman and by her sister Violet Doyle.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Irasburg Cemetery.

Kenneth Faye Magoon

Kenneth Faye Magoon, 73, of Nashua, New Hampshire, died peacefully on March 20, 2008, at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, New Hampshire, following a period of declining health.

Mr. Magoon was born June 22, 1934, in Burlington, a son of Charlotte Elaine Magoon and Chester Wilfred Surette.  He served in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Better known as “Buster” to close friends and family, he graduated from Newport High School and retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was an avid sports fan and a member of numerous clubs and organizations, including the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his sister Deborah Kilby of Newport Center; by three brothers: Robert Millett of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, James Millett of Phoenix, Arizona, and Burton Leavitt of Milton; and by his goddaughter Colby Brown and her brothers Zachary Brown and Nicholas Brown, all of Stratham, New Hampshire.

Friends and relatives will be invited to a memorial service to be held this spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Berthe S. (Ricard)Lahar

Berthe S. (Ricard)Lahar, 74, of Newport died April 3, 2008, after a valiant fight with lung cancer.

Mrs. Lahar was born October 28, 1933, in Lac Megantic, Quebec, the daughter of Maurice and Lucienne (Bourque) Ricard.

On August 14, 1952, she married Eugene L. Lahar, who predeceased her on October 29, 2002.

She attended Sacred Heart School and Sacred Heart High School and was active in the Alumni Association.

She was a member of St. Mary, Star of Sea, Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella, and American Legion Post 21.

She worked at the former Montgomery Ward in Newport, Miller Auto of White River Junction, and for 20 years as sales clerk at J.J. Newberry’s in Newport until its closing. She worked for the Adult Learning Center and the Area Agency on Aging.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and nanna.  She enjoyed her family, mother, sisters, and her nieces and nephews, who were so good to her.

Survivors include her children: Carolyn Pope Charbono Walden and her husband, Scott, of Ten Mile, Tennessee, Michael E. Lahar and his wife, Marjorie, of Altona, New York, and Lucien Charbono of Lebanon, New Hampshire; by her grandchildren:  David Pope Jr. of White River Junction, Amy Pope Poisson and her husband, Andy, of Syracuse, Utah, and Emily Rose Marie Lahar of Altona; by her great-grandchildren:  Caleb and Paige Pope of White River Junction and Noah Poisson of Syracuse; by her sister LilianneGosselin of Newport; by sister-in-law Cecile Coburn of Newport; by brothers-in-law Elmer Hauver of Newport and Richard “Skip” Bernier and his wife, Helen, of Newport; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins.  She was predeceased by her parents, Maurice and LucienneRicard; by her sister Denise Deslauriers; by sisters-in-law Lillian Hauver and Rachel Brainerd; and by brothers-in-law:  Arnold Morin, Frank Coburn, Paul E. Gosselin, Jean Louis Deslauriers, and Howard Brainerd.

Funeral services were held April 8 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newport.

Frederick M. Kipp

Frederick M. Kipp, 61, of Highgate died at the Franklin County Rehab on Thursday, April 3, 2008, with his loving wife and children at his bedside.

Mr. Kipp was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 18, 1947, a son of Dr. Stanley H. Kipp and the late Hazel Stone Kipp.

He was a longtime employee of Pike Industries, as an estimator, and enjoyed his job and did it proudly.

He enjoyed golfing with his father, brothers, and son.  His past was filled with his joys of cooking, golfing, hunting, and camping.

He was a 34-year member of Newport Elks Lodge 2155 and was honored with a lifetime membership.

He married Patricia Malloy on October 21, 1983.

Besides his wife of over 24 years, he is survived by his father, Dr. Stanley H. Kipp, of Haines City, Florida; by his four children and their spouses:  Amy and Jacob Blaise of Derby, Adam and Bonnie Kipp of Newport Center, Nicole and Jonathan Alves of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Michael D. Kipp of St. Albans; by four grandchildren:  SkylerKipp, AdisonKipp,Jordyn Elizabeth Alves, and Madison Alves; by his sister Sandra McFee and her husband, Mac, of Lake Worth, Florida; by brothers Douglas Kipp and his wife, Karen, of St. Mary’s, Georgia, and Peter Kipp and his wife, Debra, of Woodbury; by brothers-in-law Richard A. Malloy of St. Albans and Daniel Malloy and his wife, Debbie, of Montgomery; and by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.  He was predeceased by his mother, Hazel Stone Noch, in 1999; by his brother Michael Kipp in 1996; and by brothers-in-law:  Michael J. Malloy in 1996, James E. Malloy in 1999, and David Malloy in 1967.

A memorial service will be held later this spring in the Kipp family lot in Pleasant View Cemetery in Orleans.

Janet Mae Gustin

Janet Mae Gustin, 82, died April 6, 2008, at her home in Newport Center.

Mrs. Gustin was born February 14, 1926, a daughter of Myrl and Loretta (Armstrong) Hilliker.

On August 25, 1949, she married Lee Donald Gustin, who predeceased her on September 26, 1968. She was predeceased by her companion, Ken Barlow, on July 15, 2006.

She graduated from Johnson State College and was an elementary schoolteacher for 35 years in Westfield and Newport Town.

She held memberships with the Modern 29ers, the Salem Lake Association, the Retired Teachers Association, the Order of the Eastern Star Lakeside Chapter, and the United Methodist Church in Newport Center.

She is survived by two children, Peter Gustin of Newport Center and Donna Hammond and her husband, Leslie, of Newport Center; by grandchildren:  Donnie Gustin and his wife, Tanika, of Kissimee, Florida, Dinah Cotnoir and her husband, Richard, of Irasburg, Derek Gustin and his wife, Julie, of Newport Center, Dari-Joi Glover and her husband, Anthony, of Newport Center, Dawn Lavasser and her friend, Derrick Clogston, of Newport Center, and Darcy Hammond of Newport; by 11 great-grandchildren:  Darren, Anthony, Jocelyn, Rachelle, Ryan, Camrin, Cody, Destiny-Joi, Ally, Brittany, and Olivia; by sisters-in-law Gabrielle Hilliker of Newport Center and Alma Butler of Ayers Cliff, Quebec; by nieces and nephews:  Robert Hilliker and his wife, Sandy, of Newport Center, Marion Stevens and her husband, Clint, of Florida, Jim Hilliker and his wife, Faye, of Newport Center, and Linda Waterman and her husband, Jerry, of Newport Center; by several great-nieces and -nephews; and by cousins:  Helen Bowen and her husband, Glenn, of Newport Center, Richard Armstrong and his wife, Virginia, of Arizona, and Richard Wanamaker of Nevada.  She was predeceased by grandson-in-law John Lavasser; and by his brother Stanley Hilliker.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport.  Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, at the United Methodist Church in Newport Center with the Reverend Richard O’Hara officiating.  Interment will be in Newport Center Cemetery.

John J. Foley Jr.

John J. Foley Jr., 73, of Newport died of medical complications at North Country Hospital in Newport.

Mr. Foley was born August 26, 1934, in South Orange, New Jersey, a son of John and Ellen Foley Sr.

He served his country during the Korean War, rising to the rank of sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. A highly decorated Marine, he received a Purple Heart, Marine Corps good conduct medals, and Marine Air Wings as part of the 1st Marine Division and VMJ1 Squadron.  In 2000, he was recognized by the Republic of China for his service during the 1954 to 1955 conflict.

After serving his country, he was a sucessful businessman from 1955 to 1975 within the electronics industry.

In 1977, he moved to Vermont with his family.  He became well known in Barton at the Country Corner Store.  After numerous endeavors, he finished his career as a tax preparer and retired in Newport.

He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman.  He enjoyed photography and storytelling with his children and grandchildren.  As a naturalist, he loved being in the outdoors and educating and respecting nature’s beauty.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 50 years, Edith Jean (Swanekamp) Foley; by their eight children:  Sharon and Bruce Ader of Oxford, New Jersey, John Foley III of Jeffersonville, Gregory Foley of Jeffersonville, Laura LaBrecque of Manchester, New Hampshire, Jennifer and Uwe Hartmann of Nashua, New Hampshire, Mary Ellen Foley of Johnson, Michael Foley of Penacook, New Hampshire, and Steven and Jennifer Foley of South Burlington; by 21 grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Margaret and Virginia of New Jersey; and by two brothers, Thomas Foley of Apex, New Jersey, and Raymond Foley of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

A prayer service was held April 6 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating.

Frances Elizabeth Favreau

Frances Elizabeth Favreau, 66, of Derby died April 6, 2008, in Newport.

Mrs. Favreau was born October 21, 1941, in Newport, a daughter of Harold and Edna (Smith) Emslie.

On July 19, 1958, she married Robert Favreau, who survives her.

She was a member of the Derby United Church, where she helped with various functions.

She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and she played in many bowling tournaments.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Favreau, of Derby; by children:  Edna Marie Dickerman and her husband, Richard, of Churubusco, Indiana, Daniel Robert Favreau of Derby, Robert Steven Favreau and his wife, Tina, of Derby, Eric Sylva Favreau and his wife, Dawn, of Newport, and Christie Duquette and her husband, Ryan, of Orleans; by grandchildren:  Andrew Curtis Dickerman, Ashley Brooke Favreau, Sean Robert Favreau, Felicity Favreau, Hunter James Duquette, Mara Elizabeth Duquette, and Ezrah Eric Favreau; by siblings: Edith Emslie of Ontario, John Emslie of Montreal, and Robert Scott Emslie and David Donald Emslie of Beebe, Quebec; and by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Derby United Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating.  Spring interment will be in Derby Cemetery.

Gerard E. Ducharme

Gerard E. Ducharme, 78, of Derby Line died peacefully April 2, 2008, in Derby Line.

Mr. Ducharme was born August 25, 1929, in Graniteville, a son of Ovide and Irene (Viens) Ducharme.

He was a self-employed farmer. He worked for Newport Furniture Parts for 15 years before retiring.

He was a past member of the Golden Age Bowling Club in Stanstead, Quebec, and a member of its board.

He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, traveling, hunting, and visiting family members at get-togethers.

He is survived by his children: Daniel Ducharme of Newport, Rachel Ducharme of Derby Line, Madeleine Roberts of New Hampshire, Gabrielle Ducharme of Burlington, Roger Ducharme and his wife, Donna, of Illinois, Jeanne Snell of New York, Rene Ducharme and his wife, Kerri, of Derby, Lorraine Gilbreath and her husband, Harold, of Arkansas, and Denise Constant and her husband, Aaron, of New Hampshire; by 15 grandchildren; by several great-grandchildren; by two brothers, Paul Ducharme and his friend, Vicki, of Florida and Claude Ducharme and his friend, Pat, of Massachusetts; and by three sisters:  Lucille LeBlanc and her husband, Louis, of Massachusets, Georgette Stratton and her husband, George, of Beebe, Quebec, and Dolores Tinker and her friend, Paul, of Orleans.  He was predeceased by his brother Leo; and by a special friend, Ida Comstock.

Funeral services were held April 7 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery in Derby Line.
