OCCA’S WINTER GOLF CHALLENGE

        Orleans County Citizen Advocacy (OCCA) will host its 2nd annual Winter Golf Challenge fund-raiser on Saturday, February 4, at 11 a.m., at Prouty Beach. 27 par, nine-hole course, all par 3s, or go around twice for an 18-hole experience. 4-person format: one club per person, no handicaps. Each person will receive one ball; additional balls will be sold for $5 each. Cost is $25 per person or $35 per person if doing 18 holes. For $125 a business or person can sponsor a hole.         There will be a House Fire Benefit on Friday, February 10, at the Glover Town Hall at 7 p.m. An evening of entertaining musical numbers and short performances by friends and neighbors of Clare Dolan of Glover, who lost her house to a fire. Family friendly. Refreshments. Admission by donation. All proceeds go to the House Fire Fund.

 

FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE IN NEWPORT

FUND-RAISER FOR GRIEVING FAMILY

        A dance and raffle are being held at the Elks Lodge in Derby on Saturday, February 11, as a fund-raiser for Justin and Nicole Matte whose seven-year- old daughter Kaylynne died on December 6. The money will be used to pay for Kaylynne’s headstone and to cover medical expenses. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the dance starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person.         The 27th annual Glover Trailwinders Poker Ride will be held on Saturday, February 11, rain or shine, snow or no snow, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prizes will be awarded at The Candlepin restaurant at 7 p.m., followed by dancing to a DJ. Stop at any five of the following establishments, and turn in your hand by 5 p.m. at The Candlepin. The stops are Lake Parker Country Store in West Glover, Currier’s Market in Glover, Parson’s Corner in Barton, Robin’s Roost in Westmore, Bob’s Quick Stop in Irasburg, Albany Village Store, Craftsbury General Store, Trifecta Lounge in Irasburg, and The Candlepin restaurant in Barton. Cost is $5 per hand, and travel by any means. Proceeds benefit the Glover Trailwinders Snowmobile Club.

AARP TAX AIDE PROGRAM IN NEWPORT & DERBY

        Free tax returns will be prepared for taxpayers with low to moderate incomes, with special attention to those 60 and older, every Wednesday beginning February 1, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport. AARP TAX AIDE PROGRAM IN GREENSBORO, CRAFTSBURY & HARDWICK

        The Greensboro Free Library is going to be an AARP Tax-Aide Center again this year and they will be preparing 2011 tax returns from February 1 to April 14. Available to taxpayers with low and middle income, with special attention to those age 60 and older. If you have a simple tax return, you can take advantage of this free service. Call Greensboro Public Library and leave your name and phone number and a volunteer will call you to set up an appointment and tell you what you need to bring.         Northeast Kingdom Learning Services on 1 Main Street in Newport offers GED preparation, High School Completion Program, Accuplacer preparation, basic computer instruction, learning assessments, and instruction in most academic disciplines. Vermont Adult Diploma Program. Tutoring services at an hourly rate for grades kindergarten through 12th grade. All services are free.         RSVP Bone Building classes are being offered twice a week at Island Pond Municipal Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 9 a.m. Starts with a pair of 1-pound ankle weights and light dumbbells, and progressively add weights with the goal of being able to use 5-pounders. These are free exercise classes to prevent or reverse osteoporosis. Weights provided. Classes are free.         Goodrich Memorial Library in Newport is sponsoring a Chess Club open to anyone from fourth grade to adults.
