Newport Town Meeting -- Voters were feeling generous | Newport City
Published by March 2, 2011
NEWPORT — City voters brought a spirit of generosity to the polls Tuesday. The three city officers who were up for re-election won new terms and every article but one on the 18-article warning passed.
Mayor Paul Monette easily defeated challenger John Hall to gain a second term by a margin of 415 to 124 votes.
Aldermen Richard Baraw got 371 votes, and Alderman Denis Chenette received 348 to beat Woodman Page who trailed with 220 votes.
Voters approved a $2,819,000 city budget by a 371 to 162 margin and gave the nod to two half-million-dollar bond issues, one to finance reconstruction of the Long Bridge — 400-144, the other for general road reconstruction — 393-150.
The Newport City School District was also a winner. Its $615,745 budget was given the nod by a margin of 326 to 212.
The sole defeated article was one that would have exempted the Masonic Temple on Masonic Lane from property taxes for five years. That item went down 254-282.
Voters approved an agreement with Shattuck Hill Investment LLC that would bring the city $600,000 over a six-year period in exchange for the city’s support for a Walmart proposed for Derby. That measure received an overwhelming 431-104 endorsement.
Turnout was light with only 549 of about 3,250 registered voters making it to the polls.
